Listen Up! No. 78: The Milk - 54-46 Was My Number

Four white boys from Essex - who almost called themselves Nigel Winterbottom and the Flat Back Four - playing a knees-up knockabout mix of motown, soul, ska and '60s r'n'b? Really? Hearing is believing, and skeptics beware: not many unsigned bands would have the cojones to take on the blissful reggae-swing of Toots and the Maytals' '54-46 Was My Number'; less still could make it their own by adding a funk/soul roar and swaggering groove.
